Dad Gift List 2022

My best Dad gift yet, this Star made by Epic.

Dad-like folks: We’re notoriously hard to buy for, aren’t we? I’m not sure if it’s because we’re difficult and like control, so we buy all our own gifts before you can get to it. Or if we’re selfless, simple folks who don’t want for all that much. Or a thousand configurations in the middle but, wow, even I admit, we can be hard to buy for.

Some of us, like myself, are harder than others, because I’m kind of bougie.

The gift I want most this year is more than our family has budgeted for my Christmas gift.

Sure that could make me sad, but I like to think of it as a gift to work towards — whether that’s by increasing how much money we put in our Christmas Budget line every month so next year it will fit, or by saving up for it in some other way. Or maybe these are just things I get to dream about or maybe I’ll go with the smaller gas option instead next year.

The point is, the fun isn’t always in the getting, sometimes it’s in the dreaming too. With that in mind I’ve pulled together some of the things I’d love most this holiday season, big and small, and I thought I’d share them here with you, to spark some creative gift ideas for the cool, approaching-middle-aged-but hanging-on-for-dear-life, masculine person in your life.

Without further ado:

DAD’S CHRISTMAS GIFT LIST 2022

Rookie POUR OVER COFFEE SET UP

Since we’ve already declared I’m bougie, I’ll just bring the point home with my loyalty to pour over coffee. I love coffee. But only good coffee. Here on Salt Spring Island, that means hitting up my favourite little coffee shop, Switchboard Cafe, or making a super delicious cup myself.

I’ve built my kit over the years, rocking the Hario v60, a cheap stove top gooseneck kettle that Katherine quickly replaced with the gorgeous fellow electric gooseneck kettle, an affordable coffee scale with timer, and a hand grinder.

If I were to do it all again, I’d love to grab one of these bundles from fellow, I must admit, I do love a hand grinder though, I’m a purist like that.

If you’re looking for something a little lighter on the budget to get you started, check out this sweet little bundle.

Wolf + Grizzly — CAmpeFire Trio

Okay, technically I already have this amazing Campfire Trio made up of the Fire Set, Fire Safe and Grill. My love, Katherine got it for Christmas last year!

It was my favourite gift from last year and was a surprise dark horse. Sure, I like the next guy, love the idea of being able to grab my backpack and head out into the forest for a hike and a fire, but I was surprised at just how versatile this set up was. From hiking with the kids, and making donuts on the fire, to camping with Peggy the camper van and leaving no trace behind, to setting it up in the backyard of an airbnb we stayed at in the Olympic Forest this summer the Wolf & Grizzly Firesafe was the hero of our family fire experience.

The Trio is soooo great that I would actually love a second set, so I can keep one in my day trip backpack and the other in Peggy The Campervan, ready for overnight adventures. One of the ways I make getting out into nature with kids easier is by having great gear, ready for adventure at the drop of a hat.

Wolf and Grizzly makes getting out into nature look and feel good.

I mean check out our day on the Skokomish River last summer. We made beach lunches to write home about!

There’s nothing like BLT’s and cold bevies on the water with friends!

Currently in my Wolf & Grizzly kit: Spark Fibre, Wilderness Gloves, Fire Set, Titanium Cutlery, Fire Safe, Grill, + the Cook Set

Still on my Fire/Camping Wishlist: another set of Titanium Cutlery, another Campfire Trio, and the BEAUTIFUL Cast-Iron Dutch Oven—in both sizes of course!

Bread Knife For a Crisp Slice

Okay, I know it’s a weird one. Who wants a bread knife?

This guy!!! That’s who!

Now stay with me. I love fresh, crusty bread, a nice piece of sourdough with a little smear of honey, or made into toast dipped into a sunny side up egg— is there anything better? I think not.

But you know what really grinds my gears? When you go to cut your delicious, beautiful crusty loaf and you squish it and squash it and tare it apart! Uneven slices, pockets of air squashed out of existence, wonky shapes and ridges. I just can’t have it. And so I humbly offer you the solution in the form of a bread bow.

Do I have one yet? No! Have I coveted that of my friend? You know I have. Here’s my hint family ::cough cough:: love me tender with a bread bow!

Anian - Sustainable Wool Clothing

Image by Yan Palmer #friggenfilm amiright?

I’m such a predictable creature of habit. I love getting up everyday and wearing a version of the same thing. Express myself you say? Yes, sure! That’s why I buy variations of colour.

Take this Melton Wool Button up from Anian— A sustainable long fashion clothing brand designed, and made locally on Vancouver Island. I have 3 of them: Goldenrod, Olive and a discontinued Navy.

This company is always at the top of the gift list I hand over to Katherine before every major celebration.

Father’s day? A Waxed Tin Cloth Hat. For my birthday? The Field Coat. The past two Christmas’? A beautiful Fisherman’s Sweater, now discontinued and the newer softer Cashmino Crewneck.

The coolest thing I’ve found with this gift is that it’s the kind of slow fashion that means it gets better the more you wear it. 3 years in and my wool button ups are somehow looking better than the day I got them. They’re the work horse of my closet, and they keep me warm, yet stylish, helping me effortlessly shift from dad, to from chicken farmer to rugged and cool business dude.

Gozney Dome Large Family Outdoor Pizza Oven

Okay so this one is a doozy! But! When I imagine the coolest Dad I could be, I imagine myself outside on a Thursday evening, music playing, twinkle lights twinkling, watching the kids jump on the trampoline, and the teens ride back and forth on the half pipe. Friends join us with drinks in hand, and smiles across faces. We gather around a picnic table and make our own pizza from my signature sourdough crust. — I don’t have this signature crust yet, but with this oven you bet I’d figure it out!

I stand with a peel in hand, master of my Gozney dome, premium outdoor pizza oven.

These will be the days i’ll remember when I’m old and my kids are grown and I’m bugging them to pick up the phone and call their old man every once in a while. Or winning their loveby taking the grandkids for the weekend! Maybe I won’t go all out and get the Dome, maybe I’ll be more reasonable and down the small Roccbox instead, but with a family this size, and my imaginary far off grandchildren, bigger is almost always necessary!

Of course, my Dad’s Christmas Gift List wouldn’t be complete with a comment about how all I really want is time with my friends and family. Give me a coupon for some quality time together, or an experience we can have together and I’m thrilled!
The dads in your life probably want that too … along with a bougie pizza oven.
