CHICKENS ARE SELF CARE

3 Months ago we rolled up on Salt Spring Island with NO IDEA what was in store for us! So much has gone so very wrong. But this moment right here is everything I’ve ever wanted for my kids.

It’s just 1 of 100 reasons we moved out of suburban life and onto this magical rock full of trees and wonder.

It’s not a fancy moment. It’s just my 5 year old, Mayhem strolling around our property with a Serama Chicken, roosted on his shoulder. Hot Tip: Serama’s are the smallest breed of chicken in the world. They have SO MUCH PERSONALITY and they lay the cutest little white eggs. Now you know.

As I got closer I realized that he and squeaks were having a very delightful conversation. Mayhem was telling her all about the quail he got for his birthday. Spouting off all the random facts that he knows. Practicing his conversation skills? Or maybe being the youngest of 5 meant he needed a place to talk uninterrupted?🤷🏻‍♂️ who better to listen than a chicken!?!?

He goes to bed exhausted and dirty and braver than the day before. This transition has been harder than expected. But these moments are the ones that let me know we are in exactly the right place. Sometimes the right thing is also a hard thing. 🤷🏻‍♂️ but gahhhhh it’s so the right kind of hard!

Also this photo prompted me to buy 24 more hatching eggs.

Because Chickens are self care! Am I right?
